Two views of an unidentified cavalry camp in Chattanooga. The deserted house in the background appears in the third stereo photo from a different angle. Notice the Central House hotel on the right. This was located at the corner of 5th and Market Streets. Cameron Hill is in the distance.

The first thing I see when I look at that image is the fence. Made of boards dismantled from inside houses. With the wallpaper still on them. It's very sad to think of those people returning home to find their house gone or all the boards stripped from the interior walls. :frown:

The stereo photo looks like someone has written, "——————— of the nuclei of Chattanooga" on the reverse side at the top using a sharp stylus.

There was a family story on my mother's side that when they came back home after the fall of Petersburg, all of the valuables they had hidden were gone.

Could it be the hill at 5th & Walnut, per this 1871 map?

Here's an 1876 city directory for anyone who wants to trawl through and see who was living there, then backtrack to the 1870 Federal Census and then 1860.
