So, my son borrowed a cartidge box from a fellow historian, and I'd like to get him one for his Birthday in September. So, either a used one, or point me to a good place to shop please. Piece by piece...

Whenever I'm shopping for anything my first stop is Regimental Quartermaster. For a new generic 58 caliber box with a US box plate is about 70$ All the sutlers carry them and are similar in price. You can spend up to 200$ for one from one of the custom leather makers. Maybe someone on here will see this and may have a used one they are willing to part with.

That is my hope, and if it takes some time, I don't mind. When I first started doing Living History, I was given the advice that you get yourself outfitted with the basics, and then sloooowly add to your ensemble. I think this is good advice.

If only more people followed this advice. Over the years I've been annoyed by folks that place a high price tag on the reenactment hobby, yet when you look at their kit, its full of unnecessary or inappropriate pieces.

Then there are the poor folks who are starting out, get lured into Sutlers' Row (time and time again) and spend money on 'great deals' only to discover their newly purchased items aren't appropriate for their unit portrayal.

Let's be honest, most of us could start out in this hobby for under $2K... or less if they shop like you are now, looking for good, appropriate, used gear. Good luck to you, and your son!
