Hey yall, new member here. I have been fascinated with the history of the Civil War all my life. This past week my wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to spend two days at Chickamauga. Instead of doing the normal park service auto tour I bought a more in depth battlefield guide and we drove to the four corners of the battlefield, walking much of the grounds. I am still in the early stages of my research and learning more about the battle, but one thing thus far that has stuck out to me is the casualty estimates or "figures". Wikipedia says the Union suffered roughly 16,000 and Confederacy 18,000 respectively.
A display at of the casualties at Snodgrass Hill shows this:
While walking the battlefield I observed many unit markers notating their units suffering 30-45% casualties. We will probably never know exactly, but I feel that a more accurate figure is closer to 40,000+ casualties, including around 5-8,000 actual battle deaths. As the numbers stand now, the casualty rate per day is equal to or slightly greater than Gettysburg. Does anyone have any further insight into this?
