Hello all. Im new to the forum.
Wondering if there are any photographs we know of Carrie Sheads of Gettysburg or her siblings?
I actually came into possession of a photograph of an unidentified woman taken at Tyson Brothers studio in Gettysburg between
1864-1866. In running it through the Civil War facial recognition site, one of the photographs that was linked as a potential match on the site was a photograph of Carrie Sheads from a private collection. I have reached out to the poster of the photograph to see if this is the same Carrie Sheads of Gettysburg. Ill update what I find out periodically, but any information on Sheads photos would be appreciated.

Welcome to CWT from the Smoky Mountain side of North Carolina. Just jump right in and enjoy. Sorry but I can't help you but just wait for a little while and someone will be along to answer your questions.

Answered some of that in a PM? I can't be sure but it's always seemed to me the wild, instant fame created when some of these stories made newspapers resulted in some now-famous names diving for cover. The Wades fled Gettysburg for that reason, for instance although Burns ( like you'd imagine given what sounds like natural truculence ) stayed put. Georgiana Wade writes of how intrusive it became. She spent the rest of the war as an Army nurse then pulled up stakes for elsewhere.

The Sheads had a terrible war- between sons lost and another daughter eventually perishing from what was thought to be exposure to the chemicals used in preserving bodies ( Louise- one of the Powers sisters apparently was another victim ), the family was in shambles. What's so odd is, yes, Carrie' story is wonderful but just a small part of her contributions during the battle. She and her students dragged wounded in from the battlefield and nursed them. Anyway, it's always sounded to me like quite a few civilians made famous by the battle kept their heads down later- could account for an apparent lack of Carrie images. You know they're out there somewhere.

Yes they may be out there, but after 150 odd years, its doubtful any are IDd. Looking at our own lives, how many pics do we have that we can tell everyone in them, but the names of the people are not actually written down on paper, just in our memory? As the years go by and we pass on, very few will know the identities of those in th photos. I ask my parents all the time who people are in family photos

May I ask where you read the Carrie & her students dragged wounded from the battlefield?
