From my book, Above the High Water Mark, One of my ancestor's letters to his wife early in the war. In this letter you see both sides of the Conflict. The USS Fanny was the first ship captured by the Confederate Navy. On this ship were union supplies.

The union opinion of the South is clearly seen. My ancestor summed up the Southern response by penciling a First National at the top of the letter.
