As this member of the WAC looks at Captain Slocumb's tablet that marks where the famed 5th Company of the Washington Artillery was engaged on September 20, 1863, (Tour Stop 1 today), changes were taking place in the military. The officer's names on the tablet are all men. The soldier's who fought in the Civil War were primarily men, except those women who were willing to disguise themselves as mem...bers of the opposite sex.

However, by the 1940s, women were finding new roles in the military with the WAC. Although not in combat yet, this was a huge step toward integrating the military. As we remember Women's History Month this March, we hope you will consider the great strides made here at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park related to women. (cy)
