Can you help me find more info on this canteen? Picture & condition are pretty rough, but I know it came from my family.
@captaindrew is spot on. Civil war surplus canteens were reused and modified post war. Post war modifications include triangular brackets, removal of the bottom bracket, canvas cover, and a stopper that has a ring around the neck. Crossed rifles replaced the hunting horn in 1875
 
Thanks! Any idea what the #4 at the top, or the #49 at the bottom mean?
I believe the owner was from WI.
Probably 4th Regiment, Company M, the 49 is likely the number of the man. His rifle may have be number 49 in the rifle rack so his other equipment was stenciled with 49 as well. For a while my rifle was 007, my pistol was 007, my bayonet was 007, my protective mask was 007. I sometimes called myself Sergeant Bond, James Bond.
