The first time I heard cannon firing was in Jefferson, Tx at their annual reenactment of the Battle of Port Jefferson (the battle that never was). The town is on the banks of the Sabine River, dividing Tx from La. Folks were in the downtown area watching the local parade marching down Main Street, along with Confederate reenactors, some with horses and alot of equipment when suddenly there was a very loud, guttural growl from cannon down by the river, the sound reverberated in our chests and shook all the windows in town......the Union soldier enemies had arrived! All the Confederate reenactors scattered to their positions, the audience in the crowds stayed on the sidewalks to watch the battle!
