It looks old, if I’d have found that here in the UK I’d think it was Roman or earlier. I agree, It does look like it’s made from a very soft metal like lead.Exactly what material is this? It's color looks like lead, as in a Minie ball, but the rivet heads (?) look like something that should be iron or steel.
Now that I'm getting a closer look at it, I'm fairly sure this piece is made of a tin or tin alloy.It sort of reminds me of the throat of a bayonet, but I am sure that is wrong. The discolorization is from the chemicals in the soil, like fertilizers or other minerals in the soil.
