I know nothing about horses and cavalry but it Looks like it could be a cheek piece point from a bridle. I agree with @lupaglupa, possibly something that fits onto the end of a leather strap.
Exactly what material is this? It's color looks like lead, as in a Minie ball, but the rivet heads (?) look like something that should be iron or steel.

It looks old, if I'd have found that here in the UK I'd think it was Roman or earlier. I agree, It does look like it's made from a very soft metal like lead.
It sort of reminds me of the throat of a bayonet, but I am sure that is wrong. The discolorization is from the chemicals in the soil, like fertilizers or other minerals in the soil.
