I read where some of the soldiers would chew their ration of coffee beans when time wouldn't allow for the brewing. To anyone who ever bit into a coffee bean, they must have really wanted that morning caffeine.

General Butler knew what he was about--coffee is a stimulant. However, caffeine is addictive--and I'd sooner chew on a coffee bean than go into battle with a migraine!

I'm not a fan of Benjamin Butler, but he wasn't totally useless!

I've chrwed the beans before they're an acquired taste that I cannot acquire a taste for. But I always heard they chewed the grounds.

There were a few Sharp's Carbines made with a grinder in the stock. While it was called the Coffee Grinder Rifle it's believed it's intended use was for grinding grain for their horses.

I'd have to watch myself. I'd end up with the 'drunk on duty' impression.

Pricey? As in expensive. There are no cheap coffees anymore but what will expensive, fancy blended coffees do that regular coffee wont do?
