Ca Soldier

Very interesting uniform. Do know his rank? He is not wearing a Civil War era U.S. Army uniform. It appears to be based on the 1851 U.S. Army uniform, However it should not be double breasted. This type of uniform would have probably been worn by a militia company. It could also possibly be a post Civil War militia company uniforms.

When I magnified the image I am more convinced it is a militia uniform some what based on the 1851 U.S. Army uniform regulations but double breasted, with what looks like shoulder scales based on the 1855 U.S. Army uniform regulations. I surmise this is from the late 1850 and not post Civil War. Also he may be wearing leather and canvas shoes. Militia uniform photographs from this era are quite rare and this is a very interesting photograph.
