Please someone post a reply here with the serial that started the 5th model carbine. Need to be sure on two of interest. Thanks, Eric.

The serial # and markings would be very helpful in Id'ing the Burnside's in question. The term 5th model is widely used but in reality its really just the 4th model with the addition of a guide screw as the hinged load lever on the 4th model had a tendency to jam and the screw addition eliminated that problem.

15680 is the serial and has the guide screw on the right. I just want to be sure the serial is in the range and not a replacement from a scavenged 4th model. What I've read is serials are only on the frame and breech block. Why not on the barrel too?

The serial # is on the bottom of the barrel and the fore-stock has to be removed in order to see it. Your # is not an exact match in the SRS but below is the range of issue with yours falling somewhere in between.

15424 64CO A LOUDOUN COUNTY RANGERS
15630 64CO G 14TH PENNA VOL CAV
15731 08 63CO E 4TH WISC VOL CAV

Thanks UCV. Carbine sold on liveauctioneers.com for $300. Truly addictive website watching all the weapons being sold so orderly. Was hoping to pick it up for parts or to restore, but without cash from my Walther PP (need to sell), maybe it was better I didn't win it and receive the riot act from my wife. Oh well.

I follow RIA, Heritage Auctions and Invaluable and like you, find them addicting. Set up an email alert for ones you really want to be on the lookout for - never know when the one you really want may come up for bid.

The term 5th model is a misnomer. It is has been used by collectors to distinguish the difference between the 4th model and the 4th model with the addition of the screw guide. Serial # ran to about 40000. The so called 5th model has the guide screw along with the "Cast Steel" and an 1864 date on the barrel which is most of the time either very weak or nonexistent.

So 1864 on the lockplate and the screw guide together equate to 5th model? Otherwise, the owner has a mismatched lockplate?

The Burnside models have always been confusing. I guess the best way to determine the difference is below.
