As a docent I give tours or the Civil War room at the Michigan Historical Museum. I am standing here and was asked if this is a bullet hole. Could a bullet do this damage to a musket? Look at musket to the right.

To punch through a steel barrel, I would think that it must be a canister shot as a lead bullet would have flattened.

That was the view of the visitor, and I generally agreed that a lead bullet would have flattened out.
