Now here's something you don't find every day!
I was digging at a dump site where an early hotel (1830s) used to be. I found a lot of the usual animal bones. However, I found this musket ball lodged in a deer bone. When I found it with my metal detector (like a dummy) I tore away the bone that it was lodged in. I did save the bone, however.

Here's a side view.

And here was the impact side (the side that made contact with the bone).

I thought this was interesting to share. Not just because it came from the remains of a felled animal used for food 180 years ago, but because this gives a good perspective on the destructive power of these lead balls. Although not as deadly as the minie ball, this bullet would certainly have killed a man at close range. Hey, it killed a deer!
Thanks for looking!

Nice but your killing me as the farmer bottom plowed and rowed the fields in the CS camp here but deer season is not up till tomorrow at dark. I will be going thru the gate Monday morning.

I'm jealous that your farmer bottom plowed.
Our farmers over here are still loving the no-till farming method.
We need our fields bottom plowed bad.
Keep us updated on your finds.

When we found the camps in Grenada it was the same. I ask the farmer one day about it and he told me that the state of Miss has a rule that you can't plow but every 5 years.
