Bruce Catton

Go to Library book sales. I had gotten so many books that way. A lot of history books and cook books are in such great condition, I don't think anybody ever checked them out.

My latest buys at book sale are:

"Articles of War Winners, Losers, and Some Who Were Both in the Civil War" by Albert Castel

"The Frugal Gourmet On Our Immigrant Ancestors" by Jeff Smith

"Copperheads, The Rise and Fall of Lincoln's Opponents in the North" by Jennifer L. Weber

"Lewis and Clark Across the Divide" Smithsonian Book

"The Long Pursuit" Abraham Lincoln's Thirty-Year Struggle with Stephen Douglas for the Heart and Soul of America by Roy Morris, Jr.

Those were just from one sale. I have gotten two Bruce Catton books at previous sales. They are $1.00 for hardbacks and 50 cents for paperbacks. On the last day of sale, they give you a big bag and for 5 dollars you can have as many books as you can get into the bag. I seen people get 20 or more books in the bag.

Bought a great one on finding the real Robin Hood (they haven't), one on the Medici family (and I thought my family had issues!!). They had the complete set of a WWI encyclopedia, but wanted $500. Most likely worth it, but not to me.

Will do. Thanks for the heads up.

Our Library also has a Geneology room. Free access to Ancestry.com, both complete sets of CW pensions, alot of local history from almost every State. Very full

There is a used bookstore near me in Newark, DE that has a few for cheap. I think each volume is under $10. Hardcover of course. The store is named 2nd and Charles. I love that trilogy.

I also take classes there from time to time: on my Kindle (which is ok, but a pain), Geneology, writing.

No "Kindle" for me! I still have my Catton American Heritage The Civil War 2-volume Deluxe edition I got for Christmas, 1960, plus the 3 volumes of The Army of the Potomac from just a little later in the '60's. I just replaced the paperback of Sam Watkins' Company Aytch I loaned out years ago and never got back through Amazon for 1 cent ( plus shipping! ), and a used copy of Irving Buck's Cleburne and His Command for a LOT more - $20.

I found his Army of the Potomac trilogy for a couple bucks at a yard sale a few years ago

I just saw the same trilogy for sale for a few dollars at the going-out-of-business sale of a local used bookstore. (Sigh.) (Although the reason wasn't that they were being run out of business; it was because the proprietor died and his wife couldn't keep it going on her own. But still, sigh.)

One of my sons bought me a Kindle a couple years back. I use it for books that I want to read, but not necessarily own, or that I can pick up for free. My CW collection and other history books are and will continue to be hardcopy.

People, people, people,.....please....check here:

I just did a quick check....I see all 3 of the "Potomac" books for $3.49 & free shipping.....

I've been doing business with them for years....just some patience and perseverance...

I seem to remember that I picked up that triology years ago for something ridiculous like $5 for all...free shipping etc....

clarification....each book....for $3.49....fee ship...(so,....3 x $3.49 = $10.47....wattabahgan!)

With used bookstores working e-bay and Amazon like mad, plus whatever is in your local community, I'd be very surprised if you couldn't pick up a reasonably priced copy of the trilogy, all bound together in a single volume, and in good condition.

I just found 2 of the 3 in the Potomac trilogy for $2 each at my local Goodwill store. Both are in very good condition and are the Doubleday printings from the 50's. Just have to find the 2nd book. Got books 1 and 3.

Of course you want the whole set; but for reading ( in case you've never ), each is an independent "story", easily read and understood on its own footing. Think of them in the sense of novels: Mr. Lincoln's Army is the story of the McClellan-Lincoln conflict, ending with the departure of the General; A Stillness at Appomattox is all about Grant; with Glory Road about the failed trio Burnside-Hooker-Meade between the two. ( Meade a failure in the sense that he failed to destriy Lee's army. )

I haven't read it, but can you tell me if Catton's focus begins on July 4th, 1863? Is that why it's worth two bucks at Goodwill?
