Bridle straps on uniforms

I was doing some work on my Civil War data base and got the chance to use the term "bridle straps" in one of the entries. I always found this term interesting when discussing soldiers uniforms. So who can be the first one to tell the rest of our forum about the use of "bridle straps" on soldiers uniforms?

Also I am not sure the term was used during the Civil War era and would love to have someone confirm it was a period term.
