Just listened to Brian Matthew Jordan's zoom broadcast on his new book A Thousand May Fall. The book looks to be so good that I went right out and ordered it. It is a social history of the 107th Ohio, a German regiment. He mentioned that one continuing problem for immigrant soldiers was Nativism (in the case of the 107th, it was serious).
