Breastplate Question

I found this yesterday, in addition to the ball in the other thread, and was hoping to learn more about it. All I know at this stage is that it is clearly Union. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums from Central Ohio. That's a nice example of a cartridge box breast plate that appears to be original. These plates would have been attached to the cartridge box slings and held in place by putting leather through the loops on the back. The problem was that polished brass shines bright and this would provide an excellent target for your enemy to shoot at. Not a really smart idea but they did not lose favor until after the war ended. You are correct that it is for the Union army. If you don't mind sharing, where did you find it?

@Billw12280 is spot. One thing to look for is, are the loops iron or steel. They make some pretty good repops. The face looks good, with no makers mark on the back it hard to tell from the photo. The iron or steel? is the key.

Thank you all for the responses. The loops look brass. Based on the location and material it was in, had I not retrieved it myself I would say it say was a reproduction.

This is just not my area at all, so all of your feedback is greatly appreciated. I will take more pictures of the loops this evening.

Its to hard to tell from photos but they look steel to me. If they are iron good chance its real, if steel or brass repop.

I just used a neodymium magnet and did not notice a draw to any parts on the piece.

Are there any other tests you can suggest that will not risk damaging its integrity?

All,

Is there anyone in MD that may be willing to meet up and take a closer look at this one? I'm really torn on the authenticity of this one despite having pulled it myself.

I'm also a member of the nihonto board, so if your interested in that area I have examples I'd be willing to bring for viewing in exchange for the evaluation.
