Branding Iron

I just dug this old blacksmith forged branding iron at a plantation/homestead site in west central Mississippi.

The home was occupied from 1845 through the 1940s. I really have no idea the exact age.

The letter "A" I would think, represents the owner's name.

Please let me know if any of you have any knowledge regarding old branding irons and help educate me.
I've only done a very light cleaning on it so far. I'll post a cleaned up picture later.

Maybe find out all of the owners names and if the A matches, you'll have a date range, unless the homestead was in the same family it's entire life.

A nice looking old branding iron. The blacksmith made should give an idea to it's age.
