Author Dave Powell posted an excerpt for his upcoming book "The Chickamauga Campaign Vol. 3: A Barren Victory" on his Chickamauga blog. I would copy/paste the entire blog post but it is pretty long so I'll just put the link here: https://chickamaugablog.wordpress.com/2016/08/16/bragg-vs-longstreet/

Some interesting insight on Bragg/Longstreet. I definitely look forward to reading the entire book when it comes out soon.

Interesting. I need to read more on the subject - the generals, armies, battles etc to answer the question. Another book on the list.

There were many times in the war when armies simply dropped their baggage, trains, etc., and traveled light. Jackson's wing during the Northern Virginia Campaign comes to mind. I think his men dropped all their gear except haversack, cartridge box, cap box, belt, and bayonet. I don't recall exactly, but I believe that the only wagons that were brought along held their ammunition.
I also seem to recall Grant limited the AoP''s baggage to either one wagon per regiment or brigade prior to the Overland Campaign.

One thing is for certain. Longstreet probably wasn't prepared for the night and day difference in attitudes between the AoT and the AoNV generals. Not saying everyone got along in the AoNV all the time, but by this point the AoT was near fracturing in the upper command. You can blame on Bragg for part of that, but Polk and "friends" deserve part of that blame too.

I have to catch up. On the surface I know what you are saying, but i do not know enough to make an informed statement. I recently picked up Daniel's book on Shiloh, and picked up a wargame covering battles from Belmont, Fts Henry and Donelson, Shilo and hypothetical scenerios of Corinth. Enjoying all immensely. As arnold said "i'll be back".

Check out Larry Daniel's book on Stones River as well when you get a chance.
