Everything I've read doesn't point to fame being his downfall. Sounds as if a downfall was going to happen to him regardless.

I'm no forensics guy, nor do I tout myself as being one. Could be that the fame made his paranoia which can go hand in hand with paranoia contributed to things in his life. He believed he was being chased by "Booth's Avengers". Had the press not made him the 15 min celebrity I'm sure he would not have had the the bundles of hate mail he did.

Knowing full well he was a religious man in the extreme he was given a door man's position in Kansas? Who was crazy then? Every person who passed through those doors were offending him in one way or another. Why was he there? Because at he offed Booth. Once again, fame as a contribution.

That is my take on it. Had they just let him be, which wasn't going to happen, maybe he would have been a little better off.

And anyone who can pull an escape like the one he did, with a gy and horse on the outside couldn't be all bonkers either. If he was the hat waving as well as fast riding as was claimed, showed that he did to some extent like the press.
