Reading Burke Davis' "The Long Surrender". He has some details on Jo Shelby's command crossing the Rio Grande at Eagle Pass.
Says- "Shelby was followed onto the Mexican shore by distinguished companions: Governors Charles S. Morehead of Kentucky and Henry W. Allen of Louisiana, and the Texas ex- governors, Pendleton Murrah and Edward Clark".
Doing some very modest research, I am unable to verify that Morehead was there. Not sure about the others- and certainly unsure about ex-governor Morehead- but I'm thinking he was in Canada or Europe, in 1865. Although there are some sources that place him in Mexico prior to moving to Mississippi.
Anyone know if Morehead crossed over with Shelby? Guess I'm just curious- why would he return to the US, only to find himself making a dash for Mexico?
