"By 1864 the glory battles of the Civil War were over." Is the first line in "Bloody Roads South". I got that far and handed the book seller the money. That line alone demonstrates that Noah Andre Trudeau knew what happened as soon as Grant crossed the Rapidan and ran into Bobby Lee. I have just finished the Wilderness portion of the book and will spend the night reading about the road to Cold Harbor. Copyright is 1989 and I wonder how I had missed it. From the third of the book I have read I don't hesitate to recommend it highly.

Not the detail of Gordon Rhea's series, but a very good one-volume treatment of the Overland Campaign.
