Blockade runner researchers might appreciate a list of errors and additional ships I have identified in the American Neptune pictorial supplement III (Blockade Runners) book.
The watercolour paintings in this book were originally been made by an unknown artist when the ships visited Queenstown, Ireland and are now part of a private collection housed in Bermuda. I have used British newspaper reports to identify the dates that these ships visited Queenstown. Copies of these paintings also appear in Civil War Naval Chronology book. If you need any clarification of these identifications, please contact me by my email address shown on Spithead's Facebook page.
Plate III reads Scotia which is incorrect, it should read Gem
Plate IV reads Fairy but this is a picture of Julia
Plate V the "Unknown" has been identified as Fairy, allegedly bound for the Rio Grande, she was not a blockade runner as her destination was traced to Monte Video, however another Fairy has been identified in Havana in 1865.
Plate IX Iona has the wrong date as she left Queenstown on the 30th January 1863 not 1864
Plate X this was not the Flora II but the Florie. Flora II left from Bristol and never entered Queenstown; however, this picture is often used incorrectly in articles to represent Flora II.
Plate XI this Fox was a Quiggins built vessel, not the Caird built Fox, later called Agnes E Fry
Plate XII Banshee here refers to Banshee I. The Liverpool maritime Museum has a painting they call "Banshee" which has often been used to illustrate this famous ship, however this incorrect as it is a painting of Hope made by the famous marine artist Samuel Walters .
Plate XVI The Banshee illustrated here is a poor representation of Banshee II, the original ships replacement .
Plate XIX Flora never entered Queenstown and Iona was there in January 1863 but was alone.
Plate XXII The Margearet & Jessie had two aft funnels as a runner and the "Unidentified" at the bottom is likely the Georgiana ashore at Charleston and not the Modern Greece as often seen.
Plate XXIII the "unidentified" at the top is Hope and "Teaser" has now been identified as Wando
Plate XXIV this Peterhof is not the same vessel as the blockade runner Peterhof (screw)
