I know how folks on here love to discuss "Black Cofederates"
, so when I came across the below mention of Black Confederate at ChickamaugaI, I thought I would share it to see if anyone could verify it or add addition information?
This comes from the book"Civil War in Tennessee" by Steve Cottrell, dated 2001.
The author doesn't use any footnotes and in the preface states "this informal work has been worded in an easy-to-read style for the average person to learn and enjoy a little history..."
(It is very easy to read and would be a good book for a younger reader who is interested in history.)
"One of the last Confederate charges of the day included the Fourth Tennessee Cavalry, which participated dismounted in the assault. Among the troopers of the regiment were forty African-American who had been serving as camp servants but who now demanded the right to participate in the last combat of the day. Captain J. B. Briggs gave his permission for them to join his command on the front lines. Organized and equipped under Daniel McLemore, the personal servant of the colonel of the regiment, the black troops had collected dropped weapons from the battlefields during the regiment's campaigns and were prepared to serve the Southern Cause to the fullest. These men, like thousands of other Tennesseans, fought in defense of their homeland against an invading foe, not for slavery or political ideas. The Fourth participated in one of the final charges against General Thomas's line that bloody day in September, and their little company of Confederate Aferican American troops suffered four killed and seven wounded."
