Why was Benjamin Grierson so ineffective against the Col. John Logan's cavalry (under Franklin Gardner) at Port Hudson. Various units of Logan's command kept harassing Union outposts and even raided Banks' main supply depot at Springfield Landing. In one raid Union Brig. Gen. Dow was captured (later exchanged for Fitzhugh Lee). Grierson's first attempt to destroy Clinton was thwarted when Logan ambushed and panicked Grierson's men. His second attempt succeeded only because he had Paine's infantry division (4,000 men) to support him. Grierson never pushed Logan back enough so that Logan couldn't harass the Union forces around Port Hudson.
