Walking around my area I stumbled across this gem (last summer). This is quite a monolith as it stands out alone in the middle of an open field in the midst of a subdivision. I've not been able to find much more detail currently than what I've annotated below.
Photo taken by me.
Inscription reads: "Bell Cemetery. Laid waste by the Federal Army in 1864 - One fourth of an acre reserved in deed of sale of 1840."
Based on research done in 1936 by a Ms. Margaret Jeffries found in the USGW archives website below. Notes as follows:
1. SUBJECT: Bell Cemetery
2. LOCATION: .4 mile northeast of Culpeper, Virginia on Route #15 on north side of road
3. DATE: 1840
4. OWNERS: Owned by Mr. James M. Bell or some member of his family ever since 1840. The land was reserved in a deed of that date.
5. DESCRIPTION: None.
6. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This cemetery has people of different names buried in it. It is thought that the bodies that lay beneath some of the stones have been removed to other cemeteries. However, there are still quite a few left here. In the center of the plot stands a granite shaft with the following inscription on
one side of it.
In memory of Capt.
James M. Bell and
Amelia, his wife,
of three children
of that marriage,
of four infant chil-
dren of Gov. Wm. Smith
and Elizabeth his
wife, & three chil-
dren of Judge John
W. Bell and Maria
Storrow, his wife.
On the other side of the shaft and on the base is written:
Bell Cemetery was laid waste
By the Federal Army in 1864
1/4 acre reserved by deed 1840
There is also a smaller shaft inscribed on each side:
Cumberland GEORGE
born
April 15, 1797 in
Fauquier Co. Va.
died
Aug 23, 1863
at Culpeper, Va.
Elizabeth Churchill GEORGE
Born 1795
In Stafford County, Va.
Died June 9, 1861 in
Culpeper Co. Virginia
Cumberland George was a famous Baptist preacher, well loved and respected not only in this county but in neighboring counties, and did a great deal of good. There is another marker in the
yard with this inscription:
Dr. Wm. A. HERNDON
aged 45 years
Simply to Thy cross I cling.
7. ART:
8. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Mrs. Mitchell, Culpeper,
Virginia.
