i could explain it with photoshop but he doesn't use that

I use Seashore. It's free and very limited in what it can do. I find it works good enough for B&W photos. Also, Apple Photos which is not as good as iPhoto was.

I didn't want to put a watermark across the entire photo. That gives me a little protection against someone using my photo.
