Hello,

I am trying to find the identities of officers who served on the staff of Francis Barlow at Chancellorsville and/or Gettysburg. So far, I have identified two individuals who were on the staff on detached service, Capt. Edward Culp of the 25th OVI and Capt. Charles Wickham of the 55th OVI. Does anyone know of any others, especially assigned officers who were not detached?

Thank you

Now idea but good luck!

These are on my list from Gettysburg:

Captain John T. Wood (25th Ohio). Barlow's staff, wounded severely.

Lieutenant Edward C. Culp, Aide-de-Camp (25th Ohio). Rode forward July 1 to ascertain source of cannonading. Served Barlow and Ames.

J. C. Clay, Orderly (Company I, 107th Ohio). Served Barlow.

Sources:
-The 25th Ohio Vet. Vol. Inf. By Edward C. Culp
-J. C. Clay, The National Tribune, February 6, 1896

The Bridgeport Evening Farmer (Bridgeport, Connecticut, July 2, 1913, p. 1) reproduced stories told fifty years earlier concerning the battle of Gettysburg. It mentions that "Captain William L. Hubbell, of Company D [17th Connecticut], acting aid to General Barlow, is reported killed. Captain Hubbell was a Bridgeport business man."

I can find no other source verifying that Hubbell was detailed as an acting aide-de-camp to Barlow. Hubbell was not in fact killed, but only captured on July 1, 1863, and he mustered out of the service on July 19, 1865. A different article in the same newspaper suggests that it was receiving regular updates around the time of the battle from an unidentified correspondent who appears to have been a well-informed member of the Eleventh Corps, presumably even directly associated with the 17th Connecticut, and suggests the information about Hubbell being detached to Barlow's staff is reliable.

Thanks, Tom.

So that makes, so far:

Capt. E.C. Culp (25th Ohio)
Capt. C.P. Wickham (55th Ohio)
Capt. J.T. Wood (25th Ohio)
Capt. W.L. Hubbell 17th Connecticut)
Orderly J.C. Clay (107th Ohio)

Thanks, Tom.
