Baldy: Major General William F. Smith by George S. Maharay was self-published in 2013. It has no reviews on Goodreads and a single scathing 1-star review on Amazon.

William Baldy Smith: Engineer, Critic and Union Major General in the Civil War by Stephen Nicholas Siciliano comes out this summer, published by McFarland. The author is a Northwestern Michigan College professor and this seems to be his first published book. It is under 300 pages and only about 20 pages longer than Maharay's work, but hopefully this will be worthwhile.

Besides Smith's contentious Civil War service he was a highly-regarded engineer for 15 years before the war and lived just past the turn of the century.

Published in 1904, a year after Smith's death, if you're into that kind of book.

Interesting that the author was his fellow Union general.
Wilson was actually a really good writer. His Under the Old Flag is excellent and his book on A.J. Alexander was good. Even being outdated his books are worth reading.
