Avenel is an historic home in Bedford, Virginia, built by William M. Burwell in 1838. It is has been recently and beautifully restored.
William Burwell's daughter Catherine married Dr. Thomas M. Bowyer. Dr. Bowyer was Captain of the Bedford Light Artillery until he was promoted to Major in August 1863 and became Chief of Ordance in Ewell's Division.
In July 1863 Cpt. Bowyer treated a wounded Federal prisoner, Colonel William H. Powell, 2nd W. Va. Cavalry. Colonel Powell was exchanged in February 1864. He was commanding a division of cavalry during Hunter's Raid when he had the opportunity to repay his debt to Dr. Bowyer by protecting Avenel, which was unharmed by the raiders.
After the war Dr. Bowyer went on serve as mayor of Liberty, now Bedford.
Colonel Powell was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers in October 1864 and was brevetted major-general of volunteers in March, 1865. In 1890 he was awarded a Medal of Honor "for distinguished services in a raid where, with only 20 men he charged and captured the enemy's camp, 500 strong, without the loss of a man or gun at Sinking creek, Va., Nov. 26, 1862." He went on to become a successful businessman in Illinois.
