You might want to check out my thread on Col. George Kirk 2nd and 3rd North Carolina Mounted Infantry Union. Kirk led mostly Confederate deserters in raids behind enemy lines in Western North Carolina. Kirk was only in his mid 20's. Kirk was a very aggressive and controversial Union officer . No doubt he would of been quite at home in the SAS.

I have a thread on "Tinker Dave Beatty" a Unionist guerrilla leader from Eastern Tn and of course Newt Knight was aggressive. We should have some threads on old Newt.

The Vicksburg campaign of May 1863. It split the CS in two. IMO the most decisive strategic campaign of the war.

It did that but can't really agree that the odds were against Grant.

I was looking for a copy of Kirks Raiders written by 'Mathew Bumgarner' when I came across his other book 'The UnCivil War of the Blue Ridge in TN and NC' the review says:
The Author has scratched the surface and oh, what a bloody scratch it is! The entire story may never be in one volume and only a few of the families of the area have memory of the feuds and the treachery of the times. Matt Bumgarner has pulled off a scab some would want left alone but there is no healing either way. War is total. The story is real as are the people. North Carolina History has been given a gift of long forgotten, perhaps on purpose, memories. This book should be required reading for all students in the schools of North Carolina.

It looks like a must have book.

Hampton's Beef Steak Raid

I like the fact that Hampton made sure that he took "several certified Texas cattle thieves" with him. Its a shame that they didn't think about the fact that they couldn't feed the cattle, quick boys tuck in before it spoils.
