I have a full schenkel shell that must of passed thru a tree or root system as it has pieces of wood fused to the shell. The wood is small and I want to coat the shell wood and shell so that it can be handled with out the wood falling off from being handled: what could I used that would protect the wood and make it resistant if you will to being handled and not fall off I would like to have clear finish product thank you

The answer is simple. Don't handle it.

Whatever it is that is adhering the roots to the surface of the round will not be made stronger by anything applied to the surface. The responsible thing to do is having a display case made for your relic. Mount it behind glass & hang it on the wall.

There are thousands of Civil War artillery rounds held in collections of all sorts. Most of them are cleaned off & shiny with a clear coat. Your clinging roots make for a unique testament of a place in time. Your mantra should be do no harm.

Note: The blob in the photo is a reflection of my hand.

Almost 100% the roots grew around the shell while in the ground, this happens to artifacts quite often. Very cool artifact!
