Artifact Withdrawal

With the demands of this life, a new job, and multiple irons in the fire, it has been a LONG TIME since I have added anything to my collection. Part of the reason is because I've not come across anything that that made me think "I HAVE to have this." I feel like I'm going into withdrawal. So with that, I thought I would share a nice little flask I picked up a few years ago. It is ID'd, with the markings "Eng. J.A. Scott, USS Galena, 1864" inscribed on the pewter cup. Scott was serving on the Galena during the battle of Mobile Bay. A neat little artifact.

It reminds me about the so-called punkin seed flask I have that was purchased from Militaria, a shop in Dallas, Texas in the mid-1960's. It was part of a consignment made by two maiden sisters of their father's items. He had supposedly been a minister in Dallas around the turn-of-the-century but during the war had been Lt. Col. Joseph Holmes commanding the 8th N.Y. Heavy Artillery at Petersburg. (Its colonel had been killed at Spotsylvania or Cold Harbor.) Being then only a poor college student, I put on lay-away a number of smaller items including his lt. col. of artillery shoulder straps, polished cotton sewing kit or "housewife", a pair of bone dice, a chess pawn, and the flask. It's molded glass with a leather cover and a pewter screw-on cap; it gets its name from its shape.
