I would be very interested in what type muskets they were and who made them. I would suspect that they English ones were Enfields but only 25? From the article it looks as if they were going store to store. Thanks for posting.

I should have pointed out the above article was from the Detroit Free Press (not sure if it was the morning or evening edition but I could look it up), May 8 1861, page 4, Column 1.

in early May of 1816 many states were desperate to arm the regiments they were forming and it appears Ohio sent agents to Canada to look for arms.

So what about the 600 gun of German manufacture. Germany military arms or German civilian arms?

Maybe the German "light guns" that were found to be "unsuitable, if not unsafe" might have been shotguns. Just a thought since the 25 English guns are described as muskets and, if the German guns were military muskets, they probably would have been described as such.

I've been thinking some more about the German "light guns". When I think about substantial numbers of guns available in Canada in the 19th century, I think of the fur trade. I wonder if those "light guns" could have been trade muskets, but I have never seen or read about a German made trade musket.
I know, for me "thinking some more" isn't a good thing. I come up with odd ideas. :)
