General Armistead lead his namesake Brigade at Picket's Charge and breached the Union line at Cemetary Ridge. Had he had a punch behind him, he may have rolled the Union line at Gettysburg and American history would look very different than it does today.

I'm sorry they've taken the plaque down in Baltimore. It will eventually go back up, I think.

Little fun fact about Old St. Paul's Cemetery. Right down the street is the original building for the University of Maryland Medical School, the fifth oldest medical school in the US, established in 1807. When the school was established it was illegal to dissect human bodies. The legend goes that it was no accident that the school was located right down the road from St. Paul's and the fresh source of corpses therein. University of Maryland would hire grave robbers to procure dead bodies for the students to work on. Its assumed St. Paul's was a major source of supply for the school.

The grave robbers worked all the cemeteries of the city. St. Paul's is rather small, so I suspect it was not a major source.

I had the pleasure of spending a day with a small group (DAR, I think) cleaning up the graveyard (about 8 or 10 years ago). We cut the weeds and trimmed the low lying branches of the trees.

The most significant figure buried there (IMHO) is John Eager Howard, commander of the Maryland Line during the Revolutionary War.

I lived in Baltimore for about 40 years. I think Howard, The Maryland Line, and most of the Revolutionary War history is largely forgotten.

I never knew Lewis Armistead's father was in command of Fort McHenry during the British bombardment in the War of 1812. I see the woke have struck again by removing the memorial plaque outside the gates of the cemetery.

Wasn't it his UNCLE?
