Both men seem to be wearing a Masonic badge - was this a part of the uniform, or is there any other significance ?

It was not per say part of the uniform just a way for others to know they were Masons.

This reminded me of a story about a Confederate veteran buried here in Belmont County, Ohio. Richard Ryan was born in Ireland and owned a business in St. Clairsville, Ohio. When the war began he was in Arkansas (some versions of the story say Virginia) and he enlisted in a local militia company. Ryan died of disease shortly after enlisting. His friends wrote his name and St. Clairsville address on his coffin and nailed his Masonic pin to the coffin. His body was sent home and he is buried in the Methodist cemetery in St. Clairsville.
