I have books I think that covers every single battle in the eastern theater but do not have a book on Appomattox or battles that took place after Petersburg all the way through to Appomattox. I don't know which book to get so I would love to hear your book recommendations and comments. Oh! I'm looking for a regimental level book for I love regimental level books on each battle.

To Appomattox, Nine April Days, 1865 by Burke Davis is more of a narrative constructed by personal accounts of participants than a full fledged history. It is an interesting, fast paced read and worth your time if that style appeals to you.

Funny you should have recommend that particular book. Just last week before going out of town with him, a close friend gave me a great condition copyright 1959 edition copy of this book.

Now it must move higher up the "to read" stack.

I second the recommendations of Marvel and Varon for big picture and significance.

As to the day to day movements of the armies from April 3-9, Chris Calkins probably knows the details better than any other modern historian. The Appomattox Campaign (Da Capo Press, 1997) is a straight-forward here's what happened campaign study. Because the book is written as part of a specific series, he doesn't have the page space to dive deep into individual battles and also does not include many quotes from the soldiers on the ground, but it's a great resource for the job it is asked to do.

Lee's Retreat: A History and Field Guide (Page One Inc., 2000) is essential for following the overlapping routes of each portion of both armies.
