Saw this photograph of a soldier while surfing the internet for reference pictures. He looks to be a Confederate, but I was wondering, does anyone recognize what depot this uniform could've come from?
What makes you thin he is a Confederate? An argument could be made he wears a Federal frock coat. The height of his collar, the size of his buttons, and the distance between buttons would help ID the uniform.
I don't think it's a Federal frock, it's hard to see but if you look closely it looks to me like the collar is trimmed in a darker color than the rest of the jacket/coat. Many of the early war state and commutation jackets/coats were trimmed this way. Just not enough visible to even take a guess. Is this something you have in your possession? If there were any notes on the back, ID, or photographers studio stamp it would help narrow it down some.

I thought it was a US frock coat at first, but the button spacing and dark-trimmed collar (no light blue piping) threw me off. Definitely not a Federal shell jacket or sack coat, so I assumed Confederate.

It's unfortunately not in my possession, though I'd love to get into the ACW image collecting field one day. I saw it while browsing Pinterest for interesting Confederate uniforms. The dark collar made me think Columbus depot for a second, but the collar shape is incorrect. Early war commutation/state made could definitely be the answer.
I believe this photo is part of the Liljenquist Family Collection of Civil War photographs at the Library of Congress. It is a sixth-plate ambrotype portrait, and he is identified as an "Unknown Confederate Soldier" in the collection.
