How many of the forum members will be going to Gettysburg this year? With so many going, I am expecting a bunch of Gettysburg related discussions this year. I am a bit worried I will get an overdose of Gettysburg. Is there such a thing as Gettysburg battlefield fatigue?

My society, the Company of Military Historians will hold our convention at Gettysburg in April. I am still undecided if I want to attend this year's convention or not. I have visited Gettysburg 3 times already and not sure there is much else to see. I have been reading up on the battle and in the last couple of months have read 8 books on the battle and will probably read 3 or 4 more. Even though we will tour the battle ground for two days I may go a couple of days early and look things over on my own. Any suggestions on what I should send the extra days doing? What are your thoughts on picking a small part of the battle and spending two days just on that part of the battle? It has been 5 years since my last visit, any thing new I just have to see?

Gettypeds...they're awesome. Imagine touring the battlefield on a street legal scooter that looks like a two-seater motorcycle sidecar. My wife and I rented one in November and it was awesome. You can rent one on your own for $100ish for the day or have a 3.5 hour guided tour of Day 1 or Days 2 and 3.

You may want to check the schedules for the GNMP and the Foundation for their calendar of events during your visit. Hiring a guide is always a good Idea. Go out of park boundaries, behind Confederate lines or the cavalry battlefields, not just east but north ,west and south.

If you have only visited 3 times you did not see or take in everything.....I have been there three times a year 3 or 4 days a visit for 13 years...I read books on the battle...and then look it up...Have taken many battle walks with park rangers....there is always something new to explore
No I wont be there for july 1, 2, 3,

I don't get there as often as I'd like but you are right about three times not being enough. My dad used to go 2 or 3 times a year for longer than you reading and still would be going if he were alive. There's always something new to learn.

Thank you all for the suggestions. Me on a motorcycle? I had had 3 street accidents on motorcycles by the time I was 17. My God has there not been enough blood spilled at Gettysburg already? The Historical Society idea is very good. Also I am sure I have really not seen every thing there or learned every thing about the battle. One of our speakers will be David L. Richard, and although I have not had the pleasure of meeting him I understand this tour guide and author is very knowledgeable on the Battle of the Wheatfield. I will have to send a little extra time at the Wheatfield prior to his lecture and tour of the site.

There will be a lot of programs this year, in the spring and on the anniversary. The trick for 6-28 to 7-4 is to park your vehicle and walk or trolley to where you can. There is only one 150th Anniversary and yes there will be people there. I am at the the park 3 or 4 times a month. There is always something new or different to do.

The park has done alot of tree removal in the last couple years. So the sight lines have changed on various parts of the field. It may make a fresh experience for you.

Look online for 140 Places Every Battlefield Guide Should Know and see if you can create your own itinerary. It's always more fun that way! Good luck! :smile coffee:

I went there alot with my grandfather when i was little. He went there in the mid 1920s and went on tours with some old soldiers. he knew all the hidden (at the time, at least) places which were not in the park then. I have pictures of him eithewr in devils den or the roundtops. big boulders.
