Bruce Catton describes the chase best in A Stillness at Appomattox. They pressed hard. Lincoln's faith in Grant and Grant's faith in Sheridan were ultimately rewarded by the end result.
Where there any specific tactics changed after the go ahead from Lincoln?
 
7 April 1865 also resulted in my favorite moment involving Longstreet:

General Lee studied it [Grant's letter suggesting surrender] without a word or sign and then silently passed it to Longstreet, who was sitting near him. Longstreet read it, also, and handed it back.

"Not yet," he said.
