I'm looking for any information on Lewis Washington Liscum (on most rosters he's listed under Liskum). I know he enlisted with the 60th New York but was court-martialed and dishonorably discharged in early 1862 and then enlisted with the 2nd Maryland in August 1862 and served until the end of the war. What I'm looking for is the reason behind his court-martial. I've tried New York and Maryland records and can't get any information beyond the fact that he was court-martialed. If anyone could help, I would appreciate it.

Found some clues that may help in narrowing the search:

-In the roster for the 60th NY Infantry, he is listed as Liskum, Washington. He enlisted on 9.25.1861 at Ogdensburg, to serve 3 yrs.

-Mustered in as a private, Co. K. 10.30.1861.

-Dihonorably discharged 2.28.1862 at Camp Preston King in Baltimore Maryland.

Will keep looking.

I found this on Washington Liskum....It looks like he was just a misfit of a soldier....page 83 tells about his court martial not much details...I would read back a few pages because it sounds like he and other misfits waiting for army justice formed thier own Company "Q"....turn back to page 83..

Thanks for the info, BBF and 5fish. That's exactly what I was looking for. Apparently the six months of hard labor changed his attitude since he enlisted with the 2nd Maryland immediately after it was up and served with that unit until the end of the war.

Have you tried submitting your request to Carlisle Barracks? They claim to have a lot of records of the various regiments. You can submit a request on-line or by email. I got a quick reply but they had no luck finding a court-martial that I was looking for.

Enlisted for the bounty? I'm shocked, I say! Well, not really.

Thanks for the information everybody.

Dixie, I didn't realize that they had an online request. I've only ever done research in person at the Army Heritage Institute. I'll keep that in mind next time, thank you.

I just found some additional information. I found that there were two Lewis W. Liscums who enlisted on the same day in August 1862 in two different regiments (the 2nd Maryland and the 2nd Maryland Eastern Shore). According to Maryland's records, the Lewis Liscum in the 2nd Maryland served until the end of the war and the Lewis Liscum in the 2nd Eastern Shore was transferred to the 1st Eastern Shore but there is no record of him in that regiment. In all honesty, I'm not entirely sure what is going on with these records. My guess is that he served the 2nd Maryland since there seems to be a more complete record of his time there and almost nothing about the Mr. Liscum in the 2nd Eastern Shore.
