Hello, Here is a kepi in really nice shape. Looks like someone added a period USMC badge to it. The cap is a green color with what I researched to be a post Civil War manufacture tag. There is a C and badge insignia that used to be on the top as you can see the outline.
Any idea on what unit it is? I will be looking for the missing badges and buttons to put the cap right.

Best regards,
Bob

Interesting Kepi. Looks like a great question for resident kepi expert @Package4
Very nice IW kepi, these were also used as GAR and were manufactured in great numbers, I have an identical piece that continued its transition from blue and made it to a very nice butternut. Yes, the person I purchased it from claimed it to be CS, but when you moved the chin strap you could see the original blue. The dyes used on these were very cheap and did not hold their color very long, oxidizing rather quickly. Since this was a private purchase cap and not GI issue these contractors could get away with inferior materials.

Still, a very nice example and if you leave it in the sun it will become a very nice mellow brown!

The cap can be dated around 1872 and no later than 1882. I can not find a contract for hats with the Us Government but may have had state contracts. Like I said most likely a private purchase for GAR use.

That does not appear to be a period Globe & Anchor, but most likely a 20th century piece. The original Globe and Anchor was the metal Globe/Eagle on fabric with an embroidered anchor. The emblem was to used on fatigue caps from 1869 until 1875/6 when there were some slight deviations, putting the Globe and Anchor as the only USMC insignia. There is only one known (to my knowledge) period approved 1868/9 Globe and Anchor and it resides at the USMC Museum Quantico.
