I love that field. You were lucky to have the place almost to yourself, it's an extra special place when that happens.
That shot of the work being done on the bridge is interesting, glad they're taking care of that old structure.
Looks like you got in before the rains came (or maybe after). Its no secret that Antietam is my favorite. I have been itching to get back. I have a client out in Hagerstown and am trying to set up a lunch.
I am doing some research on my wife's great great grandfather, a junior officer in Ripley's Brigade (CSA) He was wounded at Antietam, either in the fighting around Mumma's farmhouse, or in the southeast corner of Miller's Cornfield. The Brigade was badly mauled by the Yankees.
Nice pictures. Didja go up in the tower? Sharpsburg is very high on the list of battlefields I would like to visit next year. Hoping to spend at least 2-3 weekdays there and avoid crowds.
Great photos. That is part of the appeal for me of Antietam is the lack of others around. I've been to Gettysburg where I've had to deal with busses of school kids but at Antietam I am lucky if I run into more than 5 people!
Yes, Gettysburg was pretty crowded when I went there a few years ago on a very cold weekday in Mid-March.
LRT, Devil's Den and the other popular spots were full of people even in those conditions.
I studied my pictures from that trip and decided the next visit to a battlefield I would make a real effort to take pictures without any people in the backround. It took me 3+ years to get back to a battlefield.
So when I went to Antietam & Monocacy Battlefields last month, I really tried to get some shots like that. I feel
very fortunate that I picked some good days without any crowds.
