FB marketplace is hit or miss. There is a lot of junk but there are some gems once in awhile. Shame we have to deal with scammers but I got a funny story about FB marketplace. I remember seeing a confederate kepi hat (Richmond depot) on there for a few hundred bucks. I thought it was too good to be true since the seller was selling it cheap and it was in great condition. Fast forward a year, the same hat was in an auction and ended up being 100% authentic going for thousands of dollars :banghead:

Some people really have no idea what they have. The pickers and storage auction people are some of the best, and worst, for under or over valuing historical artifacts. Sometimes you'll see them list common items for ten times what they're worth but other times, they'll list a really rare piece for a couple of bucks. They're just looking to make more money than what they paid for the storage locker at auction. Some of my best deals come from people who don't research.

That's very true. My bold prediction for the future of ACW collecting is that a lot of this stuff will become more widely available and for a cheaper price over the coming years. I've had a lot of deals with people who just wanted to get rid of the stuff. Some people have a stigma with having their father's, uncle's, or grandfather's collection of confederate items. In the last few years, I've seen people basically get confederate marked Enfield rifles for next to nothing because a relative didn't want guns in the house. It's great for younger collectors like us but at the detriment to the collecting field and ACW interest as a whole.

I think the Confederate market will become what the union market is.

I don't even think it's political. Dark wood furniture is worth fractions of what it was when I was a child. It's just time
Good point. You are probably correct.

Thinking about it, antiquing / Militaria is not as popular as it used to be. Granted there will always be a market for it, but it is not as much as it used to be.

Like many things, it comes, goes, and might even pick back up again later on.

Most collectables are the same and only worth what another collector is willing to pay. Some "one of" type items like certain art works are a bit different as they may be examples of wonderful talent and have intrinsic value.

Other things only have value to the collector. So if it makes you happy and you can afford the price, buy it and enjoy it.
