Y'all have been decidedly good and helpful in tracking things down for me. I'm looking for Arch Stuart. The things I know is that "Arch Stuart" is the name on his headstone in Confederate Circle, Gallatin City Cemetery, Gallatin, Tennessee.

Looking at an old UDC list I got that he was a corporal in Porter's Tennessee Battery (2nd Tennessee Light Artillery) captured at Ft. Donnelson and sent to Camp Butler. I have NOT been able to verify any of this information, though I did a quick look.

I have found Archibald Stuart in three different North Carolina units, Co. H, Thomas' Legion, Co. C, Walker's Battalion, Thomas' Legion and Co. E, 3rd NC Artillery. These all appear to be the same guy but I've not been able to tie this guy to Gallatin.

Can someone do some checking and see what I'm missing?

176. Stuart, Arch. He was a corporal in Porter's Battery at Fort Donelson where he was taken prisoner. He was held at Camp Butler.

Yes, this is what I'm trying to update and pin down more. Each year at Confederate Decoration Day, as part of the ceremony, we highlight the service of Confederates dead in the City Cemetery and this year I wanted to feature Stuart, but have run into a dead end.

Source: "Storm In The Mountains" about the Thomas Legion.

The Archibald Stuart in the Thomas Legion enlisted in Blount County, Tennessee, Sept.29, 1862. He's listed in Company H, Feb.19, 1863. There's only one file card with his name with the 3rd NC Light Artillery. Probably not the same man ?

I was unable to find anything on the 2nd Tennessee Light Artillery.

CW,

The Archibald S. Stewart of Co. E. 3rd NC artillery 40th NCSTS, Company E known as the "Scotch Greys" was raised mainly in the present day Scotland County section of Richmond County or in neighboring Robeson County. The name is spelled Stewart in my area and is unlikely one of your three Stuarts. Archibald S. Stewart is the only Stuart/ Stewart listing for Company E. One of my paternal grandfather served in the same company as Archibald S. Stewart.

Service record for Private Archibald S. Stewart:
"Resided in Robeson County and enlisted in Union County at age 23, August 27, 1861 for twelve months' present or accounted for through December 1864. Wounded at Fort Fisher January 15, 1865 and admitted to hospital at Greensboro January 19, 1865. Furloughed for sixty days February 4, 1865.

That photo must be from a few years ago. There are now two flags, a National and a Battle flying at the site and there are now posts with brass caps that will shortly have a chain. We're planting some trees this spring and are beginning to raise funds to place Carmack's Pledge to the South on a monument at the entrance. Carmack was from Gallatin.

By the way, there is an "A. Stuart" in Tobin's Battery according to Tennesseans in the Civil War but I can't determine if that's the same Stuart.

CM,
It appears there is a obit on ancestry.com but it is private and would need to be requested by a member.
