Just picked up this little 9th plate image! Fairly inexpensive and not
great quality however when an image reaches out at you , I personally, go for it!
I love how this tintype almost looks
like a drawing or painting! Came in
a complete case! Will look good with
the others. Enjoy!

That's a nice little find, pictures like that fascinate me.

Thxs @Waterloo50
Picked it up for $35
I have a few like this! Would love to know their story! Did they survive the
war? Did they have children, wives?
So many questions!!!
Yep, my thoughts exactly, sometimes we get so bogged down with things like tactics, weapons and battles that it becomes easy to forget that the war was fought and endured by real people, young people.

Notice how the photographer has retouched the area around the sides of his face so that it shows up better against the dark background, like this one of mine:

Nice pic. What is a "9th plate?" I am not familiar with the term. Does it refer to the size of the plate?
There are different sizes of Whole Plates and Half Plates. These are generally accepted as the norm today:
Whole Plate or Full Plate: 6.5" x 8.5"
Half Plate: 4.25" x 5.5"
Quarter Plate: 3.25" x 4.25"
Sixth Plate: 2.5" x 3.5"
Ninth Plate: 2.0" x 2.5"

I will add to what Mike has said that the actual terms derive from the number of individual pieces of glass or metal that could be cut from a single more-or-less standard-sized pane or sheet. Naturally, given the in-exactitude of such a process, actual sizes tended to vary, sometimes by quite a LOT! As an example of what I'm talking about, note how this example of an ambrotype from my collection has been crudely and sloppily hacked from a glass pane resulting in a very odd size and shape:

The scratches in the emulsion resulted from the undersized plate sliding up and down inside its case, rubbing against the oval brass mat which made the scratches. This is believed to be an image of a North Carolina Confederate and though this appears to have been but a scrap piece of glass it was used by the photographer anyway.
