Andrew Johnson had a heck of a political resume: alderman, mayor, state representative, state senator, US representative, governor, and senator all before the Civil War. (He had been TN senator since 1857.)
1. Was there any consideration of Johnson as a presidential candidate in 1860?
2. Could the Democrats have united behind Andrew Johnson in 1860? Or were Northern Democrats too set on Stephen Douglas and/or was Johnson too much of a moderate for the Deep South?
3. Did Johnson have any significant positive accomplishments during his presidency, or did his feud with Congress over treatment of the South prevent him from getting anything meaningful done?
