You ever get the feeling it wasn't published by the editor for the same reason nobody but 'Abe Lincoln' has a right to declare slaves free?
(regarding the statement as having never before been seen in a book....i.e. private letter).

Or, just maybe, the publisher had a page limit in mind. Plenty of manuscripts get reduced by publishers for strictly business reasons.
